When we undertake the construction or modernisation of a house, we expect comfort, and when thinking about insulation, warmth in winter and pleasant coolness in summer. Important economy is also important. When insulating a house, we assume that the investment will investment will pay for itself in the shortest possible time through lower bills.

So how to approach the subject of insulation? Which material to choose, which contractor will meet our expectations?

One of the key decisions during construction is the choice of insulation method and the best possible contractor. This is especially true for the attic, which, if poorly insulated, can cause up to 30% heat loss in winter, or create a difficult to function hot environment in summer.

Installation and material and elimination of thermal bridges

Thermal bridges are the places in the building envelope through which most heat escapes as a result of inadequate insulation installation, or which receive the most heat in the summer. When considering the choice of technology, it is important to consider which can minimise the formation of such places.

Spray polyurethane foams, such as Crossin systems, offer an advantage over traditional insulation materials in this respect. During application, they form a seamless, homogeneous surface, which makes it possible to practically eliminate thermal bridges, which is difficult to avoid when installing traditional materials such as wool.

Insulating material and the passage of time

When building a house, we expect the insulation properties to remain constant for many years. This is an important point, because the possible removal of defects related to displacement and degradation of the insulation material is a technically difficult, time-consuming and quite costly process.

Here again, the advantages of Crossin insulation foams become apparent. During application, the foam permanently bonds to the substrate and is resistant to slipping and movement. Just as importantly, the foam also does not lose its insulating properties over the years.

Crossin foams are also resistant to the growth of fungi, lichens and moulds on the surface and inside the material, reducing the amount of possible allergens in the air to a minimum.

Installation costs of foam insulation

The decision on the choice of insulation material and technology is also an economic calculation. The total cost of insulation is the cost of the material, labour and time spent on implementation. If you choose another good-quality insulation material and add the workmanship of a good installation team, you will often find that the price of Crossin polyurethane foam spraying is comparable or even lower.

It is also important to remember that the price quoted by authorised contractors includes the price of material and labour, and the contractor is left with a tidy room and good insulation.

Real savings from good insulation

Good insulation means real savings. It is assumed that in standard houses, the coefficient of seasonal heating demand is EA is 100-120 kWh/m²-yr. For energy-efficient houses, the coefficient is 15-70 kWh/m²- year.

Whether our house will meet the criteria for an energy-efficient house is in turn determined by the thermal conductivity coefficient U contained in the Decree of the Minister of Infrastructure.

For the attic described above, this factor should be U ≤ 0.15 W/(m²-K), which corresponds to a thickness of 25 cm of Crossin Attic Soft foam.

Insulation performance – the key to quality

Regardless of the material chosen, it is always best to entrust the installation to a proven specialist and not to use price as the only criterion in making a decision. There are many companies on the market engaged in this type of activity, but not all have the necessary knowledge, equipment and experience.

When looking for a contractor, it is a good idea to look at whether a particular contractor works with a manufacturer and is certified. This is the case with insulation manufacturer Crossin. Crossin’s authorised contractors are constantly trained and monitored for quality.

Even the best material installed incorrectly will not meet the requirements, so it is worthwhile to have it applied by a contractor recommended by the manufacturer.
